Tip: pick a game you can explain in ten minutes

A hamper game has to be playable on the sofa, drink in hand, without an eight-page manual. Card games, city quizzes and short party games work; complex board games stay in the box.

Tip: tie the game to the rest of the hamper

• A tasting game: blind-taste three chocolates and guess which is bean-to-bar.
